Under the Tobacco control act, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has banned the sale of any Tobacco product without pictorial warning labels, effective from 1st December 2019.

HPA stated that 90 percent of the tobacco product must be covered with pictorial warning labels. The label must also fit in the requirements set by the government in February of this year.

What effects would this have on the community?
  • Increase awareness on the dangers of tobacco
  • Encourages the public to be aware of their own health and to stop using tobacco
  • Everyone including the ones who do not have ability to read and write will receive the warning message
  • Helps prevent teenagers and young adults to stray away from smoking
  • Helps stop public smoking
  • This will not have an impact on businesses, according to the experience of nations which follow these regulations

In addition, HPA stated that the maximum number of cigarettes in a cigarette pack must be no more than 20, and other tobacco products must have no more than 50 grams of tobacco in a single package.
