The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised all pilgrims to focus on their health and safety during the umrah season.

In a tweet, HPA advised pilgrims to consult a physician before departing for umrah in order to protect themselves and prevent the spreading of diseases.

According to HPA, below are common symptoms that arise due to the diseases that spread easily during umrah travels.

  • Fever (38% and high)
  • Cough
  • Difficulty in breathing

HPA also advises to consult a Health worker as soon as possible, if you notice any of these signs during the pilgrimage.

Moreover, patients that are treating chronic diseases such as chronic lung disease, renal failure or diabetes, should consult a physician before departing for umrah.

HPA has advised all pilgrims to follow the steps below to prevent the spreading of diseases:

  • Covering the mouth while sneezing or coughing
  • Wash hand regularly
  • Avoid close contact with camels
  • Avoid drinking unpasteurized camel milk
  • Eat well cooked camel meat

Finally, if you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above 14 days after coming back to the Maldives, consult a physician as soon as possible.
