Medication for Hepatitis B is now covered by Aasandha

Hepatitis infection is a treatable viral disease which causes inflammation of the liver and can lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Health protection agency (HPA) has stated that the medication for Hepatitis B infection is now available at STO pharmacy located at IGM Hospital.

In a tweet HPA said that the medicine is now covered by Aasandha. Moreover, HPA has advised the public to present a prescription by a physician to obtain the medication.

According to WHO, hepatitis infection is a treatable viral disease which causes inflammation of the liver and can lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The virus is classified into five groups and is referred to as types A, B, C, D and E, with types B and C being most prevalent.

Some causes of Hepatitis B are; unprotected sexual contact with someone who is infected, sharing of needles, passing this virus to their babies during childbirth.

In October, HPA released the government's 'National Strategic Action Plan on Viral Hepatitis' to facilitate the eradication of the virus in Maldives. During the event held to release this plan, Minister of Health Mr. Abdulla Ameen announced plans to eradicate hepatitis in Maldives by 2025. 

Previously, WHO announced that USD 6 billion is needed to globally eliminate hepatitis by 2030.
