IGMH holds public Breast cancer information session for Pink October

An information session on breast cancer was held at IGMH on 24th October. This session was also open to public and was shown live at different social media platforms.

Information on Breast cancer was provided by three surgeons and a senior radiologist at IGMH; Dr. Abdulla Ubaid, Dr. Aishath Azna Ali, Dr. Mohamed Shifan and Dr. Aminath Nazeer. 

Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer among Maldivians. According World Health Organization’s International Agency for Cancer Research, about 73% of cancer in the Maldives is of breast cancer. Statistics around the world suggest a vast 9.7 million deaths due to breast cancer. That is approximately 1 in 6 deaths. 

During the session, Dr. Ubaid briefed on what breast cancer is and the risk factors associated with breast cancer including those that are variable, such as an unhealthy lifestyle, and those that are invariable such as age, gender, as well as genetics. He also talked about what could improve these risk factors for example, exercising and having a healthy diet.

Dr. Azna explained the symptoms of breast cancer and breast cancer screening was explained by Dr. Aminath Nazeer.  She highlighted on the importance on regular breast cancer screening for the early recognition of the disease. Early recognition also decreases the need of chemotherapy or radiation or even such surgeries that remove the breast. 

Dr. Shifan focused on the treatments for breast cancer including different treatments given in the Maldives relating to the severity of the cancer. After this, a brave survivor of breast cancer talked about her journey of cancer. At the end, the session was open for questions of the public.
