The rise in non-communicable diseases is our biggest health concern

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated that the biggest health concern currently, is the rise in non-communicable diseases among Maldivians.

While speaking at the ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of L. Hithadhoo health center, President Solih said that the number one cause of death among Maldivians is non-communicable diseases, such as cancer, heart diseases, stroke, respiratory diseases and kidney related diseases.

The President highlighted that the root cause of this is poor lifestyle choices, which includes cigarette smoking and tobacco use, consumption of sugary drinks and junk food, and the common use of areca nuts and supari in the community.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also called attention on the importance of health workers and public health.

“Easily communicable diseases, malaria, filariasis, polio, tetanus and measles, was eradicated from the Maldives due to the efforts of health workers to increase public health awareness all around the country.”

Speaking at the ceremony held at L. Hithadhoo School, President Solih said that our society further needs to increase awareness and strengthen public health.

The current government plans on ways to collectively provide health services, according to the President. One such effort is to develop 5 tertiary hospitals in 5 different areas of the country. As a result, communities in these areas have better access to specialist doctors, and services such as MRI, CT scan and X-ray.

In this ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of L. Hithadhoo health center, Health minister Abdulla Ameen and government officials also participated along with President Solih.
