MVR 4.1 Billion allocated for Health Industry in 2020 budget

Of the MVR 37.8 billion budget, MVR 4.1 billion was allocated for the Health Industry.

The Parliament on Thursday passed a record MVR 37.8 billion budget for 2020. This budget was passed with a vote from 77 members. 

Of the MVR 37.8 billion budget, MVR 4.1 billion was allocated for the Health Industry.

MVR 3.5 billion was estimated to be part of Recurrent expenditure. This includes 21 percentage as medical consumables, 60 percentage for staff expenses and 19 percentage for other recurrent expenses.

In addition, the government plans to spend MVR 566 million of this budget as Capital Expenses. This includes MVR 51 million that will be spent to re-develop Kulhudhusffushi Regional hospital to a Tertiary hospital. Moreover, the government has added MVR 90 million in the budget to develop a tertiary hospital in G.Dh Thinadhoo as well. Finally, MVR 184 million will spent to develop Health center facilities around the nation.

The government claim that this will be the largest amount spent on Health care ever. This can be seen in the government’s decision to develop tertiary hospitals in 5 regions of the Maldives, such as: G.Dh Thinadhoo, Raa Ungoofaaru, H.Dh Kulhudhuffushi, L. Gan and Hithadhoo from Addu city. 

Furthermore, the budget includes MVR 951 million for the government health scheme “Aasandha”. Also, the government has decided to develop an Elderly Nursing home in Hulhumale’ and L. atoll, and a Children’s home in Addu city.
