The 15th of August marks the date of a very extraordinary baby girl, who not only survived the odds but broke a medical record with her birth. The child weighed in a healthy 2.31 kilos at birth. The mother of the child was rushed to the hospital in a helicopter early April this year due to a stroke. The patient was critical, and the 15-week-old fetus had similar chances at the time. The mother was declared brain dead shortly after arrival at the hospital in Czech Republic.

The mother was declared brain dead and the doctors put the mother on life support in order to give the baby a fighting chance. Against all odds the mother was kept on artificial life support for 117 days and the baby was born through cesarean after breaking a medical record for the longest artificially sustained pregnancy in a brain-dead mother. The doctors kept the heart, lungs, kidney and other organs alive all the while monitoring the fetus. The nurses had moved the legs in a way to mimic walking in order for a healthy growth during pregnancy. The child was born in presence of both the father and family members. The mother’s life support was also cut in presence of them. The child is being fed by the aunt who also has a baby. The healthy baby girl was born on the 34th week of pregnancy.

One of the head doctors representing the amazing team, Dr. Pavel Ventura states “This has really been an extraordinary case when the whole family stood together… without their support and their interest it would have never finished this way”. There was a similar case in the year 2016 in brazil where a baby boy was born to a brain-dead mother.
