I'm AHZAM HUSSAIN and this is My Medical Student Life

Hassan Ahzam Hussain (Axtreme), realized his love for Medicine late, after finishing high school, while working at ADK Hospital. He was the school captain at Kalaafaanu School (2010), Dharumavantha School (2013), and at CHSE (2015). After winning 1st place in the A'level National Top 10, and receiving the Presidental Scholarship, Ahzam set his target to Monash University, Australia. According to the 22-year-old, he loves having new experiences, whether it is travelling or reading a new book. It was a pleasure for me to interview Ahzam for My Medical Student Life.

Most Inspiring Person
Although there are many people that I look up to, I would not single out one person as a role model or an inspiration because, everything that a person does may not be something that you should be looking up to. It is what they do which matters, which counts and inspires.

Single Quality that defines a great Doctor
The greatness of a doctor cannot be defined by one single trait. It is a myriad of great qualities, characteristics and mannerisms which makes a doctor, or anyone for that matter, great. It is how you play your strengths and how we overcome our weaknesses which define how great of a person we can be, in what we do.

First of all, walk us through the step-by-step processes that you went through to get to where you are today?

After finishing secondary school at Dharumavantha school and graduating from CHSE, I worked at ADK Hospital, where inspiration struck.

While working at ADK, I found out that I have received the Presidential Scholarship. I started applying to different medical universities and completed the International Students Admission Test (ISAT), essential for Medical school admission.

Through this process, I received an interview from Monash University which required me to go to their Malaysian campus. Realizing that the Presidential Scholarship doesn't cover these expenses, I started working at The Election Commission of Maldives, where I saved enough money to travel to Malaysia.

After my endeavors, I succeeded in my interviews and received my admission in to Bachelor of Medical Sciences and Doctor Medicine at Monash University, Australia.

When did you first realize you wanted to study medicine?

When I finished high-school, I actually did not have an idea of what I was going to be doing as a career. Medicine was there in the back of my mind but I wasn't sure that it was the path I wanted to pursue.

I would say that it was my time in ADK Hospital as a clinical assistant that set my decision on pursuing a career in medicine and actually made me realize what the life of a doctor would be. I liked it, and here I am.

Take us through a typical study day.

This is a hard question, because everyday is different. In university, we have irregular timings with our classes and preparation for each type of class is also different.

I guess instead of trying to have a regular schedule I try to do what needs to be done in the time that it should be done. Hence, a typical study day is hard to define.

How do you stay motivated to study?

In my personal opinion motivation is not what should drive you to study. If you have set your motivation on something, you'll find yourself at a loss, if what drives you changes.

Self discipline is more important to study and get yourself through what should be done

What are some of your favorite online resources/tools?

Monash library is quite extensive and highly resourceful, connecting us to a variety of journals, textbooks and other online resources such as Cochrane Library. I like the resources provided by Monash such as ePharmacology website, Anatomedia and UpToDate.

Name your favorite medical text book.

Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology

Why do you think becoming a doctor is important?

A doctor is an integral part of society, vital to the physical and mental well-being of individuals as well as society as a whole. Health encompasses our entire life and doctors are the ones who are responsible for its maintenance.

As Rudolf Virchow says, “Medicine is a social science, and politics is nothing more than medicine on a large scale.”

What do you think needs to change in the health industry of the Maldives today?

We need to increase the accessibility of healthcare facilities in the country, especially in the islands. The current systems fairly good in terms of availability; we have more health care facilities and recent tech coming in to the country.

I also think that our current health insurance schemes need to be revised and focused more on using the services available in the country instead of going abroad.

Finally, what is the one tip/advice you want to give to our readers?

Always learn more than necessary. Do more than you have to. Take that extra step.

If you spend your entire life just learning the alphabet, you are likely to make mistakes on letters and the order and whatnot. However, when you reach the level of writing sentences or paragraphs, the alphabet is base knowledge to you; you don't make mistakes or forget the letters.
