The eye center in Hulhumale’ Hospital established with the help of the Chinese government has opened yesterday.
In a tweet, the Chinese Ambassador in the Maldives stated that the eye center unofficially opened yesterday and started accepting patients. In addition, he mentioned that 30 surgeries were successfully completed yesterday.
The senior Ophthalmologist working in the center, Dr Chen Weirong is a veteran in this field, with 30 years of experience and more than 100,000 surgeries under her name.

Some of the illnesses treated in the camp include, glaucoma, pterygium surgeries, conjunctiva flat transport and common retinal diseases.
Speaking about the eye center, the ambassador said that some members of the team will remain in the Maldives in service of the local people, and to provide training. The trainings include use of AI technology according to the ambassador.
Furthermore, the ambassador assured that options for health awareness projects regarding eye care are being explored with the Health Ministry of the Maldives.
The Ministry of Health and China’s Ministry of National Health and Family planning signed an agreement in July 2019, to help develop treatments given in the field of eye care in the Maldives. The eye center in Hulhumale’ is part of this agreement.
