Folic acid is a synthetic form of Vitamin-B called Folate. It is an ingredient found in food and medicine that boost the immune system. In addition, Folic acid deficiency in pregnant mothers could increase the risk of neural tube defects in babies.

Doctors advise women who are pregnant or trying to conceive, to consume folic acid daily 3 months before conception and for at least 3 months afterwards. If taken correctly in these 6 months, it can boost the brain and spine development of the baby.

Folic acid also helps with childbearing. Health professionals advise men and women to consume food with folic acid, and folic acid supplements. Folic acid is found to help especially with men’s fertility.

The signs of Folic acid deficiency can be seen in a newborn child, and can also affect the mother. Some effects include early miscarriage, premature birth and neural birth defects.

There are different types of neural birth defects;

  • Spina bifida: when the spinal cord and spinal column don't completely close
  • Anencephaly: a severe underdevelopment of the brain
  • Encephalocele: when brain tissue protrudes out to the skin through an opening in the skull

It is important for women of childbearing age to consume more folic acid. This can be achieved with foods rich in folic acid such as, spinach, egg yolk, orange, cereals, cabbage, lettuce, cauli flower and broccoli. Furthermore, it is recommended to use Folic acid supplements daily, 3 months before and 3 months after pregnancy.

Daily use of Folic acid helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects by 70%. Leafy greens and Citrus fruits are foods that are rich in Folic acids, and an excellent choice for a person to reach this important daily requirement.
