A new study suggests that extra caffeine can help with weight loss.
Scientists from the University of Illinois analyzed the effect of caffeine on rats, over the course of four weeks.
The rats were given caffeine equivalent to four cups of coffee. Their diet consisted of 40% fat, 45% carbohydrate and 15% protein.
The results of the study showed that the rats gained 16% less body weight and accumulated 22% less body fat, compared to rats that were not given caffeine.
According to the authors of the study, the findings “suggests that caffeine may offset some of the negative effects of an obesogenic diet by reducing the storage of lipids in fat cells and limiting weight gain and the production of triglycerides.”
One author also stated that the results on rats could open up potential strategies to prevent overweight and obesity, and in the long run prevent disorders that occur due to these conditions.
