The vaping culture has been around for quite some time now. Pulling in a whole new generation that doesn’t agree with the traditional cigarette. The reason for this is usually because the traditional cigarette has such a brutal and bloody record. Racking up more than 480,000 deaths per year in the USA alone with 41,000 being just from secondhand smoking. The reason why e-cigs or vaping had the appeal it did was because there has not been a recorded death related to vaping. In the recorded history the death count from vaping was 0 up until this August, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) revealed that an adult was indeed hospitalized with severe respiratory illness after vaping and had later died.
No further details on the actual person of situation was provided other than the fact that this patient was one in more than 215 who were hospitalized with almost identical symptoms and one thing in common. Vaping. Now officials have pointed out that there were modifications to the actual vape and that external substances such as THC or CBD were indeed used. The patients are reported to be having shortness of breath after days of vomiting, fever and fatigue. The majority of the patients are in there 20s or late. Physicians are baffled by this sudden epidemic but suspects this to be foul play due to bootlegged components or substances used in the vaping process therefore calls out to any users to not use additives nor external parts that were not recommended by the manufacturer itself.
While this does mark the first death related to vaping. It has not been established that the death was indeed exclusively because of vaping. On the contrary vaping all the while known to be safer does come with a long list of ugly secrets. Therefore, this is a trend that we must not let continue especially because it has hit our shores in the Maldives as well.
