Single Quality that defines a great Doctor
Motivation

First of all, walk us through the step-by-step processes that you went through to get to where you are today?

I had made my decision to be a doctor quite early on, so I opted for science subjects when I studied in Aminiya School, based on this career choice. Same goes for High school in CHSE.

Right after I graduated, I started giving tuition to primary and secondary school students. I enjoyed this “part-time job” of mine as it was the first time I was actually earning for myself.

A few months later, I got a job as a clinical assistant in IGMH Radiology department. I would describe those days as some of my best days in life. I was learning so many things and meeting a lot of different people. The doctors and all the staff who work there are amazing! We all got along so well and working there with all those people was both educating and exciting. I loved working there!

I was still checking different Medical universities when I met a friend of mine who was already studying in China. She helped me get a placement from Dalian Medical University and that's how I ended up in here.

When did you first realize you wanted to study medicine?

I made the decision quite early on and to be honest, the person who inspired me was my childhood Pediatrician!

Take us through a typical study day.

My day usually begins around 6-7 am. Classes are from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm with a lunch break from 11:50 am to 1:20 pm. I am almost always exhausted by the time I finish classes, specially on a full day.

After I get home, I usually take a short nap or watch YouTube videos/series to relieve some stress. During weekdays, I normally study at night because it’s basically the only time I am free. However, on weekends, I find it more effective to study in the morning so that I can have the rest of the day off to enjoy and catch up with my friends.

What is a skill required in medical school?

The ability to overcome obstacles with patience. Medical school is full of struggles, so you need to be able to power through any difficulties that might come your way.

Name your favorite medical text book.

Gray’s Anatomy & Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine.

Do you usually get time to cook meals or do you eat outside?

It actually depends on how hectic my day was. If I have time and if I am feeling rather enthusiastic, I like to cook at home with my lovely roommate. On other days, I like to go try some new food from outside.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you first started medical school?

That college life is not at all like how it was back at home. Everything you thought you knew about yourself, you are going to rediscover again in here.

What do you think needs to change in the health industry of the Maldives today?

Availability and nation wide access to recent medical technology and procedures.

Finally, what is the one tip/advice you want to give to our readers?

You are what you make of yourself.

“…Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves…” (Qur’an, 13:11)
