Alzheimer’s Society of Maldives inaugurated

The inauguration of Alzheimer’s Society of Maldives (ASM) was held at Tree Top Hospital last night, and the society announced their aims and plans.

The inauguration of Alzheimer’s Society of Maldives (ASM) was held at Tree Top Hospital last night.

ASM is an initiative by the caregivers and family members of Mohamed Aboobakuru (famously known as “Baadee Lhathuthu”) who is senior citizen with Alzheimer’s Disease. He has honorably served the Maldives National Security Service for many years.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of State for Health, Dr. Shah Abdulla Mahir said “Alzheimer's disease and dementia are debilitating conditions for the patients as well as for their families. We must do more to diagnose and treat these patients. Families and care givers must be supported. Government will work with NGOs to formulate policies to provide a support network and care for people suffering from this disease. We will also extend support to NGOs increase awareness within the community.”

The aim of ASM is to increase awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and related physical/psychological conditions, provide support and care to families and persons impacting from Alzheimer’s disease, lobby the government to make Alzheimer’s disease a major health priority and find means of better care through research.

Furthermore, ASM are planning to take care of Alzheimer’s disease patients through media campaigns and awareness programs, and public lectures around the country. They will also hold activities for Alzheimer’s patients and provide training and psychological support for care givers.

ASM will take part in International conferences on Alzheimer’s disease and bring to the Maldives, the best practices in the field. It is also an aim of ASM to establish a day-care and information centre for Alzheimer’s patients and care givers.
